KOMEN BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION TO HOLD ANNUAL RACE FOR THE CURE®

CHARLESTON, WV – The Fourth Annual Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure® will be held at the State Capitol Complex on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at 9:00 a.m.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure® Series raises significant funds and elevates awareness of breast cancer, celebrates survivorship and honors those who have lost the battle with the disease. With funds raised by the Race, the Komen Foundation, with the help of its affiliates, funds breast cancer grants, meritorious awards and community outreach programs.

The
Komen Foundation was founded in 1982 by Nancy Brinker in memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died in 1980 after a three-year struggle with breast cancer. The mission of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening, and treatment. There are 114 Komen volunteer driven affiliates, and the foundation has raised more than $214 million dollars for the mission.

Since its inception in 2001, the Komen Foundation West Virginia Race for the Cure® has raised over two hundred thousand dollars. This money has been used to support life saving programs throughout West Virginia. Up to 75% of the funds raised stay in West Virginia to fund education, treatment and screening programs for underserved populations.

In addition to raising funds for breast health programs for underserved women in West Virginia, our Affiliate also operates an Education and Outreach program to educate and raise awareness among everyone in West Virginia. Education is the key to understanding that early detection saves lives.

To register for the race, to make a donation, or to learn about sponsorship opportunities, contact the West Virginia Affiliate at 304/556-4800 or visit the Komen Foundation Web site at www.komenwv.org.
